At nineteen, Burn Sullivant, a calf roper, is attending his last High School Rodeo Finals where contestants compete from all over the USA. He notices a young woman brushing her horse while he practiced on a dummy head with his rope, watching her from a distance. Studying her from her long hair, to her moving hips with each stroke of the brush, he wanted to meet her, but not knowing where she lives, he wasn't interested in a onetime date. He pushed her from his thoughts until his horse had other ideas by shoving him into her, nearly knocking them both down.
Shy, untrusting Riley Sanders has always avoided boys, but is relentless about training horses and barrel racing. Romance was the furthest thing from her mind when a dark-eyed cowboy runs into her, and she is smitten with his maturity and good looks. Sparks ignite their young love as they plan to meet again, though they live states apart. Then Fate spirals their plans out of control when an emergency calls Burn back to Texas and sends Riley to the hospital. Unable to call each other, they meet again four years later at a PRCA rodeo in Texas. Having thought of her all those years, Burn can't believe she's back in his life. He liked her then, and has serious feelings for her now.
Having known him only one day, Riley wonders who is Burn Sullivant really? Because of their untimely parting, she added him to her list of men to steer clear of long ago, but Burn's not going to let her escape this time. Like his name, his presence causes a slow heat to ignite Riley's heart, but she is struggling to understand why he never called long ago when she needed him the most. Burn wonders why she's so leery of his sincere interest in her.

Burn backed up a step to look at her fully and ran his fingers through her tangled hair, putting it behind her shoulders, caressing her skin. She shuddered, and his insides went weak when soft breasts moved against his chest. She could bark at him all she wished. But he was not running away.
Holding each other, standing braced against the wall, Riley's hands explored a strong back. Burn buried his face against her neck, taking in a bouquet of feminine aura mixed with sweat, shampoo, and horse. Before they separated, they kissed with urgency again. Riley became aroused when his tongue touched hers, and she almost wrapped her legs around his waist but settled for snuggling against him as close as possible.
